Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris

Posted on July 11, 2019July 11, 2019 by vicky

A few years ago I tried but couldn’t finish this. Just listened to it the whole way through to confirm it’s a rare Sedaris dud. #25wordbookreviews (link)

Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come by Jessica Pan

Posted on July 1, 2019July 1, 2019 by vicky

This very relatable author commits to overcoming her introversion over a year’s time. It’s basically my life — except I’m NEVER taking improv. Useful and entertaining. #25wordbookreviews (link)

Everybody Died, So I Got a Dog by Emily Dean

Posted on June 27, 2019June 26, 2019 by vicky

Slow start but once everyone did in fact start dying, it was a wonderful book. Perhaps I should stop reading memoirs about death and grief. #25wordbookreviews (link)

Rules for Visiting by Jessica Francis Kane

Posted on June 25, 2019June 26, 2019 by vicky

Sweet story of a woman trying to understand the complexities of friendship. I mistakenly thought it was a memoir, but it’s actually a novel. Blerg. #25wordbookreviews (link)

Little by Edward Carey

Posted on June 23, 2019 by vicky

I love Edward Carey but this book description did not sound like something I’d love. But I did. I really did. Delightfully odd and beautiful. #25wordbookreviews (link)

Normally not a Handler fan but I really enjoyed this audiobook where she discusses the death of her young brother and her introduction to therapy. #25wordbookreviews (link)

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb

Posted on May 28, 2019 by vicky

Incredibly thoughtful and immensely readable memoir about talk therapy from both sides of the couch. Reminded me of the best parts of Tiny Beautiful Things. #25wordbookreviews (link)

What’s a commonplace book?

A commonplace book is a collection of knowledge. It is a journal filled with everything from quotations, observations, and citations to formulas, facts, and figures–anything that’s worth remembering from anything one has read, heard, or seen. In a way it is a scrapbook, commemorating and keeping track of the things we have learned and the places we have been, figuratively or literally, via the media that passes through our lives: books, articles, poems, movies, songs, blogs, and so on. Commonplace books are kept by readers, writers, scholars, and students of schools and of life.
